What NOT to do when decluttering and organizing!
Perhaps an easy way to tackle decluttering is to go over what NOT to do. Here’s three great tips to read before you dive in.
1- Don’t buy organizing products before decluttering.
While it is tempting to buy all new products to have before you get started, the reality is that you won’t know what you need until to figure out what is staying and what is going. Once you have determined what you are keeping, you can properly assess what you need. Look around your home first to see if you have items that you already own that can be used for organizing. When you are ready to shop, make a list of what you need and bring it with you to avoid overbuying. Select items that will work and function in particular spaces or for specific items.
2- Don’t aim for perfection
The goal should be spaces that are orderly and where you can easily find what you need. It’s not to look like an ad for The Container Store (which by the way is one of my favorite places!) The spaces should work well for you. Success looks different for each person, so it’s ok to be happy with good enough.
3- Don’t bounce from room to room
Start in one room or one area and stick with it. If we bounce from room to room it is hard to see progress and to stay motivated. Sort items into categories and if items are leaving your home- get rid of them right away! Take items you are donating to your charity of choice, deliver the box of give- aways to your best friend. You get the picture! Don’t leave the items in your home to take care of another time because later never comes and those items continue to be clutter. Take before and after photos to keep you motivated and inspire you to continue to the next room.
