Setting SMART Goals to Get What You Want

Have you heard the saying, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”? Are there things you are wishing for or dreaming about but don’t know how to get there? Using a method called the SMART goal setting technique can set you on the path to action and discovery.

SMART goal setting requires you to set clear, easy to understand goals that will inspire you to take action and continue with persistence. SMART is an acronym, that if followed will give you the highest chance of success.

S stands for SPECIFIC. This requires you to think about what success will look like for you. Describe in detail what you want to accomplish and be sure not to be too vague. For example, instead of saying that you want to lose weight, a more specific goal would be; I will eat heathier and exercise 4 days per week to help me lose weight.

M stands for MEASURABLE. Goals must be measurable so you can determine if you achieved them. When setting goals, to make sure they are measurable, ask yourself these questions- How much, how many or how will I know when I’ve met my goal? If the goal is a bigger one, set milestones and be sure to celebrate every success. Why? It will keep you motivated to continue!

A stands for ATTAINABLE. It’s important to set goals that you know can be attainable. Be realistic in what you can accomplish. Don’t set yourself up for failure! It’s critical to set goals that with hard work and perseverance can be accomplished and bring you the feeling of success.

R stands for RELEVANT. Make sure your goals are relevant to where you are in your life right now. In most cases, we want to improve our life, not necessarily change it drastically. Ask yourself these questions- is this something I really want now? Is this something I wanted in the past, but it really doesn’t matter to me anymore? Don’t let anyone else’s dreams for you take over your thinking. You are the one in control of your destiny.

T stands for Time-Bound. It’s critical to set a time frame for achieving any goal you set, or it may be too easy to procrastinate taking action. If you set a deadline for completing a goal, you’ll be much more likely to achieve it!

It’s time to turn your wants and dreams into action. Are you ready?
